Vista stops responding — Will not wake from hibernation. Microsoft has released at least 12 hotfixes to solve problems caused when Vista resumes from sleep or hibernate. That Vista Hibernate or Vista Sleep will work, is an act of faith. It is taking a long time for Microsoft to get these power setting working reliably. I can vouch for numerous false starts caused by incompatible Bios, flaky procedures, or deleting hiberfil.
This is the cycle that I have been though: Hibernate is great. Hibernate causes my machine to hang Abandon Hibernate. Give Hibernate another chance. Yet, despite these tribulations, I am convinced that one day it will be how we use all computers in Sleep mode.

In Hibernation, no electricity is consumed by the system so a computer can be kept in this state indefinitely. Also, restoring from Hibernate is generally faster than a computer reboot. It is also different from a reboot in the sense that users can return to the exact state of the last hibernation with all running programs and open documents intact, instead of booting to an empty desktop.
The disadvantage of Hibernation is that after a period of time, there may be fragmentation of the hiberation file. Users may need to defragment the volume that stores the hibernation file frequently. This mode saves more power in comparison to the sleep mode but takes more time to wake up.
It is different from shutting down the computer because the normal operation can resume on the system waking up. The shutdown process totally disconnects the power supply to the computer.
Running services and apps are not reinstated on reboot and starting up the system takes longer in comparison to the other modes. It is usually advised that all software and apps are closed before proceeding to shut down to prevent any imperfections in storage or use. In sleep mode, the running state of the computer is saved to the random access memory RAM and the system uses a little power to keeping it running while other components are turned off.
Normal operation can resume instantly when the system is woken up usually by pressing a key. As long as the system is powered, it can stay in sleep mode for an indefinite period. The hybrid sleep mode, launched with Windows Vista combines hibernation and the sleep mode.
The system hibernates, saving running state in its hard disk and then sleeps, so it can be woken easily. The advantage of this mode is work will not be lost should there be a power outage as it be can be restored from the hard disk.
